How to choose a good contractor

The on-site sewer system that serves your home is essential for long term livability.  Two key aspects of getting a system that functions now and into the future with minimum problems, fewest repairs and lowest overall cost are choosing the right system and a well qualified contractor to install it.

Keep the following points in mind when you shop for your system and installing contractor.

  1. The lowest priced system installed by the lowest priced contractor may not be the lowest priced in the long run.
  2. Interview several contractors.
  3. Check out several systems before deciding on what is best for your home and lot.
  4. Insist on a written bid before agreeing to have any work performed.
  5. Find a contractor that is state certified as an on-site system installer.
  6. Make certain your contractor is properly insured and bonded.
  7. Ask for and check references.
  8. Evaluate all aspects of bids, including scope of work, warranties, references, time to complete work and prices.
  9. Try to anticipate problems and inconveniences before they occur and agree how to handle these items before work starts.
  10. Obtain a written contract that includes:  price, payment terms, work and pay schedule, sales tax, permit fees, the specific work to be performed, what materials are to be provided and used, warranties, procedures to change the contract, final review and acceptance requirements, and sign off procedures.

Be especially wary of contractors who:

  1. Offer credentials that cannot be verified.
  2. Offer a special “today only” price.
  3. Only take cash.
  4. Refuse to provide a written contract.
  5. Ask you to get permits.
  6. Offer exceptionally long warranties.
  7. Only work on nights or weekends.

Remember:  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
